Song of the Day (Colder Weather)

Zac Brown

I can’t believe I’m about to do this…but I’m going to post a country song for Song of the Day.  Don’t get me wrong, I love a good country song in the right setting (usually back home in Spokane, or driving through the States on a road trip), but it’s just not typically ma’ thang.  This song by Zac Brown grabbed me though, maybe because I’ve been travelling and rambling around for the past two years… so I really liked these lyrics:

“She said you’re a ramblin’ man

you ain’t ever gonna change

you got a gypsy soul to blame

and you were born for leavin'”

Sad?  Maybe, but I relate.

So enjoy Colder Weather by Zac Brown (apologies for the random add at the end of this video.  I just really like the acoustic version more than the other ones.)

Look! It’s a P.R.P.D.R.S.!

This song of the day post is dedicated to some wild guitar playin’ fools, rando-street musicians and the likes, who rock in a way that’s just cooler than the rest.

For example – this woman playing slide blues with a light bulb.  Not even Jimi Hendrix was this cool, and he’s basically the coolest.

And then there’s this guy playing on a U.F.O.  Actually, I think it’s called a halo drum or hang drum, but we’ll just call it a u.f.o. for now.  I love the way this thing sounds.  I think I saw this guy at the Envision Festival I went to in Dominical, Costa Rica this past weekend.

This one’s even cooler, but the quality isn’t as great:

…and the tea-spoon playing guitarist:

…and the just plain spoon players. My grandpa did this apparently, but probably not this well:

…aaaaaaand then there’s the hurdy-gurdy.  Why are there not more people the hur-gur, (as I like to abbreviate it)?  They’re amazing!  They transcend space and time! (Probably).

Beat box didgeridoo?  Yes please.

Romantic Ukrainian love song?  OK.  Slow-waving mother-figure?  Yes, thanks.

So there you have it.  Everyone is most definitely cooler than me because they can make sweet music on u.f.o.’s and rock a Ukrainian Poltava better than me, even though I’m 50% Polish and should really be able to do that.

It's true - I am...

I hope you enjoyed rando-song of the day post.  I’ll try to do one again sometime, because there are some Pretty Rad People Doing Pretty Random Shit (P.R.P.D.P.R.S.’s) all the time!

Happy Wrinkle In Time!

Happy 50th Birthday to A Wrinkle In Time by Madeleine L’Engle!

“It seemed to travel with her, to sweep her aloft in the power of song, so that she was moving in glory among the stars, and for a moment she, too, felt that the words Darkness and Light had no meaning, and only this melody was real.”

Song of the Day (I Need a Hundred Dollars)

I Need a Hundred Dollars by One String Sam

One String Sam at a folk music festival...supposedly.

I love the scratchy, old-timey quality of this recording.  I can imagine it being mixed and mashed in so many cool ways, but that’s up to someone else to do. I have not those skills.  This song stands alone as it is too.  I would have loved to hear him play in person!

This song is rockin’ too!

I think the top comment on this youtube video has really said all that needs to be said: “Badass Muthafuckerin at its best.”

Song of the Day (Wings) a.k.a. Nike can suck it

Today I read this article on NPR describing the near chaos arising around releases of Nike’s new glow-in-the-dark shoes.  I think I remember reading about similar problems when Nike released their new Air Jordans in December last year, where a shopper opened gunfire  to get to the shoes.

Nike’s Foamposite Galaxy shoe is being released in limited numbers

Nike – what the hell are you thinking?  You know violence has erupted around the sales of your shoes,  and you do nothing to speak against that?  How about stop making shoes.  No one would cry over it.  I wouldn’t at least.  When I read these articles I thought of this song by Macklemore.

So today’s song is Wings, by Macklemore.

I really like the 1920’s film-noir style of this music video.  Kimbra is the female vocalist on the Gotye song that everyone is obsessed with right now (Somebody That I Used to Know), but she can certainly hold her own.  I’ve been listening to a few of her songs, and she has a really great jazzy/soul/poppy vocal style.

Song of the Day (Too Close to Love You)

Alex Clare – a Brit currently working his way up the charts in Europe – caught my eye, (maybe ear?), with his song “Up All Night” but this one is definitely competing for my favorite of his songs.  His music is like a bizarre but pleasant blend between soul/r&b/dub/rock/house music. Somehow.  And it works.  Somehow.

Plus he is rockin’ that red beard and Newsies hat.

Hail the red-bearded one.

Too Close to Love You – Alex Clare

(also check out this acoustic version…I think I like more.)

Song of the Day (Got My Mojo Workin’)

All I have to say about this song is, DAMN.

Got My Mojo Workin’ – Muddy Waters

Muddy owns the blues.

(sorry for being absent ya’ll.  I’ll do my best to stay in tune from here on out.)
